1st Base Coach - AKA Martinez looking like an idiot

Why do these guys constantly go out there to coach first base with their batting helmets on?!? You can barely tell who is running and who is coaching.

  1. I've enjoyed your blog but have to comment on two things.

    1. You realize 1st base coaches in some leagues wear them so they don't get killed or hurt?

I believe in the majors they have to wear them?
Please tell me you know these 1st base coaches and are joking with them?

  2. Thanks for the comment. I am glad to have some followers! I guess this may not exactly be the kind of thing you were expecting when you signed up. Not a lot of shop talk, lol. Here are some replies.

    1. 1st base coaches in all leagues wear helmets when they coach bases, it is mandatory. I know it's a safety issue. The coach that died when he was struck in the head before it was mandatory was the brother or our AAA hitting coach. However, they wear helmets that are the style that catchers wear when they catch, called skull caps. They don't have ear flaps, they are more like a baseball cap. The players that I have been making fun of are going out there wearing their batting helmets that have 2 ear flaps. We have ones with no flaps that they can use when they are out there, but they just don't wear them. I hope that clears up some confusion. The two ear flaps is probably safer, but we are the only team that I have ever seen with guys coaching first with that style helmet on.

    2. I try! It's hard when you get so used to saying one thing. I have become more used to using the term "athletic trainer". Athletic training room is still a work in progress. I'll be better about it.

    Thanks again for popping in!

  4. Ahhh well that makes sense. I had no expectations of your blog. Just enjoy what you post. I subscribe in google reader so I get updates when you update. Thanks for telling me about the helmet issue. That's what happens to us educators, we don't know the little ins and outs of the real world!!
